Volunteer: Graphic Design: Annual Impact Report
Heroic Gardens
This is a volunteer opportunity provided by Taproot Foundation, a nonprofit creating social change through pro bono connections.
We're looking for a volunteer to create a professional-looking, digital-format annual impact report that communicates our impact to donors and stakeholders. The engagement will occur in four phases over four to five weeks. Our first session will be a brainstorm, where we will discuss the key metrics and information we would like to highlight. In our second session together, you'll give us a preview of the preliminary design, and we will provide feedback. We may need one or more additional feedback sessions before our time together culminates with you providing us with the final deliverable in a working format that we could edit in the future and a digital format we can easily share with our stakeholders. This report will be no longer than 12 pages. Our ideal volunteer has experience designing brochures or reports and will be prepared to show us their portfolio of design examples. We hope you can spend 15-30 hours over four to five weeks.
Since last year was our first time publishing, we received a lot of great feedback. We want to keep this level of momentum going and in this manner, have an opportunity to tell a great story.
We already have an annual report from last year, including brand guidelines, layout inspiration, and content structure. This role is about elevating and refreshing an existing template, not reinventing the wheel. What You’ll Do Design our 2025 Annual Report using last year’s report as a starting point Create a clean, emotionally compelling layout that highlights: Impact metrics Program photography Veteran voices and stories Sponsors and community partners Prepare a final, print- and digital-ready PDF Collaborate with a highly organized, creative nonprofit team What We’re Looking For: Experience with Canva, or similar design tools Strong visual storytelling skills Ability to work within an existing brand while adding creative polish Interest in social impact, Veterans, community health, or design for good
Heroic Gardens Mission: Heroic Gardens is a Pennsylvania-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, established in 2018, dedicated to connecting U.S. Veterans, their caregivers, and family members with the healing power of plants and nature through trauma-responsive, community-driven therapeutic horticulture programs. The organization’s mission is to help Veterans and their families grow healthier, more connected lives through the incorporation of plants and nature. Given the high prevalence of trauma, PTSD, and elevated suicide risk among Veterans, there is a clear need for complementary, accessible, non-pharmacological interventions that support mental health, stress reduction, social reconnection, and sense of purpose. Evidence indicates that horticultural therapy and other nature-based interventions may deliver meaningful reductions in stress, depression, and PTSD-related symptoms, and may enhance protective factors — such as community connection, physical activity, grounding, and resilience.
