Senior Graphic Designer – Technical Document Template Creation (HVAC Field Reference Series)
I’m seeking a senior-level graphic designer experienced in technical print design to create a one-page, double-sided master layout template for a professional series of HVAC “Tech Notes.”
These sheets are used by field technicians and must balance precision engineering aesthetics with rapid visual readability. This is not a marketing flyer or poster project — this is structured, technical design work for real-world reference use.
Project Overview
You will create a foundational design system (not a single image) for ongoing “Tech Notes” that cover topics such as:
Airflow and Fan Performance
Motors and Electrical Systems
Refrigeration and Defrost
Market Refrigeration Fundamentals
Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)
Each sheet is printed on 8.5" x 11" paper (portrait orientation) with a visible right-edge ruler that’s part of the layout design (aesthetic feature).
All pages will share a consistent grid, typography system, and section styling.
Design Goals
Industrial-grade, field-ready look — something that feels like it belongs in a technician’s binder.
Crisp contrast, tight alignment, and zero visual bleed or muddiness.
Durable aesthetic: clean technical layouts, clear hierarchy, and strong section logic.
Consistency across all future Tech Notes — a true design framework.
Deliverables
One master InDesign or Illustrator template (.INDD or .AI)
Defined style guide including
Typography hierarchy and grid specs
Color palette (industrial neutrals + accent tones)
Caution and header band formatting
Icon or diagram stroke weights
Ruler edge graphic (right side, 11” scale aesthetic)
Two visual variants (warm tone and cool tone base)
Export presets for print (300 DPI CMYK) and digital (150 DPI RGB)
Ideal Designer
Expert in Adobe InDesign & Illustrator
Strong knowledge of print layout, CMYK color control, and visual balance
Prior experience with technical documents, field manuals, or aerospace/engineering layouts
Understands how to organize dense, functional data cleanly
Can build scalable, editable templates for ongoing content updates
Strong attention to line weight, edge discipline, and type spacing
This project requires clarity, precision, and restraint — not marketing polish. Designers who normally create flyers, logos, or social graphics are not a fit.
Budget & Scope
Estimated Duration: 1–3 weeks
Compensation: $1,500–$2,000 fixed or $60–$90/hr
The right candidate may continue long-term on additional sheet development.
